The Full Story

Grange Hill High School in Westmoreland has received a donation of musical instruments and sports gear through the Ministry of National Security’s ‘Liv Gud’ Music, Sports and Technology (MST) initiative.

Among the items provided are keyboards, trumpets, drums, along with netball and football gear.

The programme, which aims to transform the lives of students through sports and music, started in 2018 and targets at-risk youth in troubled communities islandwide.

Deputy Prime Minister and National Security Minister, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, who addressed the handover ceremony on February 10, said the initiative aims to divert the attention of youth away from crime.

“Violence has crept in, and we have to find a way to redirect those youngsters and, in redirecting them, it’s not just a matter of policing; we have to find a way to get into the family space and offer those families opportunities,” he emphasised.

The Minister, who noted that Jamaica is renowned for sports and Reggae music, pointed out that if students were to put their musical and sporting talents together, they could do better academically and become more versatile individuals.

Dr. Chang said the Government is taking the message of non-violence to schools islandwide, adding that the Ministry of National Security is working with State agencies “to ensure we can reach our families in difficult communities, effect the transformation that we would like to see, and reduce violence in our society”.

He also toured the school’s motorcycle training room, which was implemented as part of the Ministry’s virtual training and simulator programme.

The training room is an offshoot of the motorcycle simulator programme facility located at Petersfield Vocational Training Centre in Westmoreland.

The simulator programme includes a breakdown of the road code and signage, description of motorcycle controls and components, and an introduction to basic manoeuvres and safe use of the unit.

Meanwhile, Grange Hill High School Board Chairman, Samuel Williams, who noted that the institution is surrounded by troubled communities, thanked Dr. Chang for choosing the school to benefit under the programme.
