Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, is calling for continued international cooperation to cultivate peace, prosperity, security and sustainable development for all nations.

“The complex issues we face today transcend borders and they demand a unified response that can only be achieved through deliberate and meaningful global partnerships,” he said.

The Governor-General was addressing the annual Diplomatic Corps Cocktail Reception and Dinner at King’s House on Thursday (March 14).

He said this year’s theme for Diplomatic Week – ‘Building Partnerships for Sustainable Development’ – underscores the essence of the gathering, and further highlights Jamaica’s commitment to fostering robust collaboration, which he cited as vital for the country’s progress and active participation on the global stage.

“In these times of uncertainty, characterised by rapid technological advancements, environmental challenges and global crises, the importance of solidarity among nations becomes ever more pronounced,” the Governor-General contended.

In this regard, he said Jamaica remains steadfast in its role as a conscientious member of the global community, diligently working alongside other nations to ensure that their collaborative efforts yield substantial and mutual benefits for their people.

“Our dedication to fostering these international relationships is grounded in shared principles such as respect, peace, understanding and collective commitment to equity, equality and sustainable growth,” he underscored.

Meanwhile, the Governor-General welcomed the 16 diplomatic representatives accredited over the past year.

They include the eight newest members who are all non-resident and who presented their Letters of Credence to the Governor-General and Letters of Introduction to Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, on March 12.

In his remarks, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of the Republic of Panama to Jamaica, His Excellency Dr. Lasford Douglas, said diplomatic relations and international cooperation are key to addressing conflict and charting the course for a sustainable future.

“The Diplomatic Corps plays a fundamental role in promoting peace, security and sustainable development at the global level. Effective dialogue and cooperation can work together to face the challenges affecting our region, in particular the Haiti crisis. We are confident, under this leadership, that Jamaica will continue to play an active role as a partner of the international community,” he stated.

Diplomatic Week 2024, observed from March 12 to 14, culminated with the Diplomatic Corps Cocktail Reception and Dinner, hosted by Their Excellencies, the Governor-General and Lady Allen.
