Opposition Spokesman Proposes Incorporating Character Education in Schools

Opposition Spokesperson on Finance, Planning and the Public Service, Julian Robinson, is recommending that character education be incorporated within the school system.

He noted that character education is pivotal to reforming values and attitudes across the society in general.

“Character education, according to the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, is ‘teaching children about basic human values, including honesty, kindness, generosity, courage, freedom, equality and respect. The goal is to raise children to become morally responsible, self-disciplined citizens’,” Mr. Robinson stated.

He was making his contribution to the 2024/25 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on Thursday (March 14).

Mr. Robinson further stated that character education “needs to be infused into our curriculum and it needs to be infused into the curriculum at the primary and secondary levels.”

“Because every day we see the effect of anti-social behaviour in our schools, and not just the anti-social behaviour, but the establishment of gangs within schools and the level of crime and violence within schools. So, I am saying to the government take character education and infuse it into our curriculum,” he stated.

“We believe it is important to address these problems at an early age and socialise our young people for the overall good of our nation,” Mr. Robinson added.
