Four key agencies have been assigned to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries.

These are Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), EX-IM Bank, the Agro-Investment Corporation and the National Irrigation Commission.

This was announced by Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, who delivered the 2019/2020 Throne Speech during the ceremonial opening of Parliament on Thursday (February 14) under the theme ‘In Partnership towards the new Prosperous Jamaica’.

“These assignments to the Ministry serve to add to the breadth and scope of its strategic objectives in accordance with its commitment to contribute to the Government’s Strategic Priority of Sustainable Economic Growth and Job Creation,” he said.

“Increased production and productivity, infrastructure development and supporting the micro, small and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) sector will be the main focus,” the Governor-General added.

He noted, further, that to grow domestic production, keen focus will be placed on
crops and meat that support the import-substitution agenda, as well as increased sales, exports and large investors through targeting of CARICOM, the diaspora, the school-feeding programme and hotels and restaurants.

Additionally, the Ministry, through the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), will continue the rehabilitation of approximately 1,000 kilometres of farm roads in addition to embarking on an infrastructure development programme for agro-parks and agro-economic zones.
