Custos law to go to Parliament

The Full Story

KINGSTON — Cabinet has approved the introduction of the Custos Rotulorum Bill in the Houses of Parliament, which will establish a legal framework for the operation of the island’s custodies.

This was disclosed by Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz, on Wednesday June 8 post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.

Mr. Vaz said this legal framework will create a formal structure within which custodes are to operate, and to standardise, promote and preserve the integrity and status of the office.

The Bill provides a legislative basis and authority by which a person may qualify for appointment as custos; the mode of appointment; as well as the tenure and functions of the office.

“It also dictates the matters relating to the removal or resignation of a custos and the penalties that may be imposed where the holder of such (an) office fails to perform the prescribed functions and responsibilities,” he said.
