Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton says he chose to take the COVID-19 vaccine, as a means of assuring Jamaicans that it is safe.
“Hopefully, by doing this, Jamaicans will see the value in taking the vaccine, and subscribe to that. As leaders we should provide leadership, and in providing leadership, I am here taking the vaccine to show that it is safe, it is important, and I encourage others to do so,” the Minister said.
He was speaking to journalists at the Spanish Town Hospital on March 19, where he received the COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. Tufton also highlighted the long history of immunisation in Jamaica.
“We have a long history in Jamaica of immunisation to protect us from many diseases… that has done us well,” he stated.
The Minister noted that while the vaccine is an important response to the COVID-19 virus, he stressed that it was not a substitute for the wearing of masks and social distancing.
“I look forward to working on the frontline with the nurses and the doctors to ensure that all Jamaicans get an opportunity to take the vaccine. As the standard bearer for public health, it is important that we demonstrate our commitment to the process that we are asking our country to buy into,” Dr. Tufton said.
