The cleaning and beautification of cemeteries in Port Antonio and Buff Bay has been designated the Portland Parish Labour Day Project for 2007.
This project was chosen at a recent meeting of the Portland Labour Day Committee. It will be carried out under this year’s Labour Day theme:’Honouring our Ancestors – Strengthening our communities’.
The work will include bushing of the compounds, the cutting of trees, the planting of flowers and the painting of buildings on the compounds of both cemeteries.
Speaking to JIS News, Mayor of Port Antonio, Councillor Benny White, said plans for working on the project have been progressing satisfactorily.
He said the Portland Labour Day Committee has received financial assistance in the sum of $100,000 to assist with the preparations for the day’s activities, adding that most of the material needed for the work has already been procured.
The Mayor said that the Portland Labour Day Committee has been working closely with the people of Port Antonio and Buff Bay to ensure their co-operation and participation in the project.
He appealed to members of the wider Portland community to give their full support to the project. Labour Day will be observed on Wednesday, May 23.
