Cabinet has approved the transfer of land at Lime Tree in St. Catherine from Petranol Limited to the SCJ Holdings Limited.
Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator the Hon. Sandrea Falconer, said the parcel of land has always been part of the Bernard Lodge Sugar Estate and the residence of workers.
Ms. Falconer, who was addressing journalists at today’s (June 13) Jamaica House press briefing, held at the Office of the Prime Minister, informed that the land was transferred to Petranol Limited in 1987 for the production of ethanol.
She noted that with the recent divestment of the Bernard Lodge sugar estate to Complant International Sugar Industry Company Limited, the Government gave an undertaking to provide housing solutions for those who had been living for decades on the lands, which were leased by Complant, and will now be displaced.
Some 16 families and an additional 80 workers residing on the leased lands, were promised that they would be offered lots for sale at concessionary rates.
Ms. Falconer noted that the relocation of the workers and their families is urgent, as the land must be made available to Complant, as agreed on in the purchase agreement between the government of Jamaica and the China-based sugar and ethanol production company.
