Brandon Brown Finds His Rhythm at WorldSkills Shanghai

What began as a collection of wires, electronic components and careful programming came together on screen as a vibrant advertisement for WorldSkills Jamaica competitor Brandon Brown.
Brandon, who is competing in skill number 60, Optoelectronic Technology, said he is becoming increasingly confident as he gets deeper into the competition.
Speaking with JIS News at the end of day two on Thursday (September 24), he reflected on his progress, admitting that it took some time to get into the groove on the first day.
“This is the first time I’m competing at a level this high. Overall, I would say that I did relatively good – not perfect but good,” he said.
He is stationed at an optoelectronic technology training workstation, where competitors work with an LED display module, among other things.
“For today now, this skill that we’re doing, I feel like I am getting into the rhythm and I am fully confident now in what I am doing,” he told JIS News.
The day’s tasks focused on module 2.1 screens, which simulate a billboard.
Brandon had to build the display from scratch, connecting the necessary wires and components before programming the screen and uploading the video.
The result was a transformation from a maze of wires and electronic components into a colourful advertisement displayed on the screen.
For Brandon, that transformation highlights the creative side of optoelectronic technology, a field that combines the physics of light with electricity to control and manipulate light through technology.
On day three, Brandon will turn his attention to modules involving light-emitting diode (LED) strips, a task he expects will demand even greater focus.
“A little studying has to be done for that one because it’s quite difficult. It’s a lot of precision,” he said.
Brandon added that an artistic mind is important in mastering the skill.
“Even the slightest mistake can make the whole image look weird,” he said.
As the competition continues, Brandon is hoping to turn his growing confidence, technical skill and creativity into an impressive finish.
