Cabinet Approves Contracts to Build and Expand Schools

Cabinet has approved the awarding of four contracts valued at approximately $617.4 million for construction and expansion works to be carried out on four primary and high schools in Manchester, St. Mary, and St. Elizabeth.
Information, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister, Olivia Grange told journalists at Wednesday’s (December 19) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, that the institutions to benefit are the Bellefield Primary School in Manchester, where a replacement school is to be built; the Lewisville High School and Merrywood Primary School in St. Elizabeth, and Carron Hall High School in St. Mary.
The Minister said one of the contracts valued at $208.6 million has been awarded to Build-Rite Construction Company for the construction of the new Bellefield Primary School. When completed, the new institution will accommodate some 840 pupils.
Meanwhile, Miss Grange said a contract for $51.3 million has been awarded to Matrix Engineering Works Limited for expansion works on the Carron Hall High School.
Construction works are to be carried out on the Merrywood Primary School at a cost of $18.7 million. These will entail the erection of a classroom and lavatory block, retaining wall as well as paving works. The firm Walcan Associates Limited has been awarded the contract to undertake the project.
Meanwhile, D.T. Brown Construction Limited has been awarded a contract for $338.8 million, to undertake alteration and extension works on the Lewisville High School.
The projects are being carried out under the Educational Transformation School Expansion Programme.
