The Full Story

Twenty-six children from the community of Blue Hole in St. Catherine have received back-to-school supplies from the Tameka Hill Foundation.

They were presented with the items on Saturday (August 19), at the Pentecostal City Mission Church Incorporated in the community.

Pastor of the Church, Concheta Thomas, said it was an “amazing” moment for the children and their parents.

“It is a blessing; they are well equipped for back-to-school. We really appreciate what she (Tameka Hill) has done. It is something that I could not do, and she has done it, so I feel good in my spirit. This is a good start,” Pastor Thomas told JIS News.

The beneficiaries represented basic, primary, and high schools, and parent Dora Henry said as a “part-time worker”, she has been relieved from a huge part of her back-to-school budget.

“It was a beautiful occasion. All the stuff for back-to-school, everything that a parent would go and buy for school was presented to them, including school bags, water bottles, and other things,” Miss Henry said.

“I am overwhelmed. I am a single mother of two young children, and it is a big plus, and the kids were so excited; they had a wonderful time,” she added.

For her part, founder of the Foundation, Miss Hill said after making a recent visit to the community, where she spoke at a youth event, the needs were identified.

“I have given them the supplies, because they can be great leaders, and I want them to use these things to do well in school,” she said.
Over the past month, the Foundation has provided educational support to more than one 100 schoolchildren.

Miss Hill, who is a former Youth Ambassador for Jamaica and a Developmental Specialist, said that although each year it becomes more difficult to obtain sponsorship, and even when she has to go into her own resources, she continued to provide for children in various communities for the past seven years.

“It is about seeing genuine affection of gratitude and hope and joy from people you have never met and may never meet again. To experience that, it gives a sense of fulfilment that doesn’t come very easy from your own assets or accomplishments; it comes from interactions with people. That is my motivation,” Miss Hill said.
