The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) is to provide upwards of US$11.6 million (over J$1 billion) in funding assistance for the rehabilitation of the Tom’s River to Agualtavale (Junction) road in St. Mary.
In his 2009/10 Sectoral Debate presentation in the House on September 15, Transport and Works Minister, Hon. Michael Henry, informed that the overall cost of the project is US$27 (J$2.4 billion) million, with the Government providing US$5.86 million (over J$500 million). He said the KFAED has “expressed a willingness” to provide the remaining US$10 million (J$880 million).
The works, which are expected to commence in the first quarter of the 2010/11 fiscal year, following the pre-qualification of contractors, include the removal/reduction of corners which should improve safety and reduce travel time by 30 per cent.
According to Mr. Henry, the engineering designs have been completed and a submission is currently being finalised for Cabinet, in respect of the acquisition of properties, which will be done with the assistance of the National Land Agency (NLA).
