Over the next two years, 300 young Jamaicans will be enrolled in an Expanded Apprenticeship Programme in critical industries that urgently need more skilled labour.
Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, who made the announcement during his contribution to the 2025/26 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives today (March 20), said the industries include construction and the hospitality sector.
Dr. Holness advised that the pilot will commence in conjunction with Sandals Corporate University, where participants will receive paid, hands-on training alongside industry professionals.
“Each participant will earn a weekly stipend of $13,500 to $16,500, with 10 per cent set aside as compulsory savings. This approach allows our youth to build a career, support their families, and contribute to the economy all at the same time,” he informed.
Dr. Holness said the Government has had significant success in public-private partnerships for the engagement of young people, including the apprenticeship model with the Amber HEART Academy.
“Nearly 500 youths have graduated, specialising in data analytics, cybersecurity, web and mobile app development. Most have secured paid internships with career pathways,” Dr. Holness said.
He added that 112 Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldiers are now being trained in coding, which will strengthen the JDF’s technological capabilities.
