Youth Urged to Become More Involved in Civic and Political Affairs… PM Golding

November 30, 2008

The Full Story

Prime Minister Bruce Golding, has urged Youth Mayors to try and engage other young people more in civic and political affairs.
“There is a tendency among young people to say I don’t care and we are not talking JLP or PNP because we recognise that in any democracy the political affairs are important and it is through programmes like this that you get a glimpse of how the system works”, Mr. Golding told the Youth Mayors when they paid a courtesy call on him this morning at Jamaica House.
Mr. Golding called on the young Mayors to use the programme, which forms part of the activities to mark youth month, being observed in November, to make good use of the exposure they were receiving so that they could become better administrators, Mayors, and councillors.
He urged them to start getting more involved in discussions about the country, their school and the rest of the world and to read more as they are now living in a knowledge-based world.
“You are the leaders of today, not tomorrow and you have a generation of people who require your leadership by virtue of the fact that you have been chosen as Mayors. This shows that already you have the potential. Never be prepared to accept what is or what should be, or even in situations where you do well, that this is the best you can do. Your view will help us to overcome some of the many problems facing us now because you have a different approach and Jamaica’s future will depend more on you,” Mr. Golding urged.
The 14 Youth Mayors were drawn from all the parishes with Portmore being represented as an additional municipality. They were accompanied on the courtesy call by Mayors from Portmore, St James, St Catherine, Trelawny, St Mary, St Thomas, Westmoreland and Portland.
