Work to replace the Stadium East running track in Kingston is expected to get under way in a few days.
This was disclosed by Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, in an interview with JIS News during the New Year’s Eve celebrations in downtown Kingston, on December 31.
“Come next week, we will begin the work to replace the Stadium East track,” the Minister said.
The synthetic Stadium East running track is to be replaced at a cost of $71.5 million. Cabinet has approved award of the contract to German entity, BSW, to undertake the work.
Ms. Grange said the Government is also advancing its effort for the redevelopment of the National Stadium and the Trelawny Stadium.
Meanwhile, the Minister said that 2018 was a great year for sports and for culture, with Reggae being inscribed on the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
“It was a great year for gender, as we now have a shelter for abused women. It was also a great year for entertainment, and there is a lot more in store for 2019,” the Minister added.
