Another phase of the $41-million Treasure Beach Drainage Improvement Project in St. Elizabeth has been completed.
The project, which was undertaken by the National Works Agency (NWA), aims to ensure that excess storm-water flows from the Great Pond will enter the Caribbean Sea.
Speaking to JIS News following a recent tour of the area, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining and Member of Parliament for St. Elizabeth Southwest, Hon. Floyd Green, said the project is important to reduce flood events in the area.
“This is a very important project for the residents of Treasure Beach, Great Bay and the surrounding communities to ensure that in the event of any weather event, that we would be protected from the flooding that has plagued the community for decades,” he said.
Minister Green noted that the completed works took place over a six-month period and included providing concrete for the base and the walls to reinforce the structure as well as excavation works.
He said another minor aspect of the work will be done on the project.
“We are going to do another phase just to tie up the entire drainage network, and there are some other works to be done in and around Treasure Beach, but I want to thank the NWA for doing this project. I want to say to the residents of Great Bay and Treasure Beach that we will continue to work in their best interest,” he said.
