The Full Story

Work on the 436,000 sq. ft. Morant Bay Urban Centre in St. Thomas is slated to commence shortly.

The centre will house more than 50 government and private-sector entities, the St. Thomas Municipal Corporation, the Parish Court, a university, as well as business process outsourcing (BPO) companies, and other commercial entities.

Speaking at the recent Factories Corporation of Jamaica (FCJ) Town Hall meeting, held at the old Goodyear Factory in the parish, Chairman of the FCJ, Lyttleton Shirley, said it is expected that construction of the facility will invigorate economic activity in the area.

“This is about a parish that the Prime Minister has identified to be a blueprint for urban development across Jamaica,” he said.

It is expected that approximately 3,000 new jobs will be generated, which will utilise the local labour force.

Mr. Shirley emphasised that the project will create opportunities for the people of St. Thomas to have access to structured development.

The meeting was held to sensitise community members of the activities that will take place during the construction phase, as well as to provide a platform through which to communicate their concerns.

Meanwhile, Mayor of Morant Bay, Councillor Michael Hue, said construction of the facility will present increased job and economic prospects and urged residents of the parish to position themselves to take advantage of these opportunities.

“We must prepare ourselves so we can get the jobs during construction, and we must also prepare ourselves that when this is finished and the jobs will be there, that we must play our part in getting ourselves trained and certified, so we can be prioritised,” he said.

Pre-construction activities, which are to get under way soon, include demolition of existing structures not included in the final plan, construction of a site office and a permanent perimeter fence to the rear of the development, as well as installation of sewerage and drainage features.

This will be followed by the construction of the main building, external features and landscaping work.
