Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, Councillor Danree Delancy, is imploring residents of Westmoreland to take precautions and heed warnings from the relevant authorities as heavy rains associated with Tropical Storm Rafael continue.
The storm is moving away from Jamaica.
However, strong winds and heavy rainfall associated with the system are still expected across the island on Tuesday (November 5).
Mayor Delancy urged persons living in areas prone to flooding and landslides to stay alert, and cautioned motorists against crossing flooded roadways.
“Find a safe entrance route or, if you can, wait until the water subsides… don’t take any risks. There is a time for precautionary measures to be taken,” he said.
The Mayor noted that the Municipality took several steps in preparation for the tropical storm, including cleaning critical drains in the parish.
He further indicated that Councillors were asked to encourage constituents to be prepared and adhere to all bulletins and warnings issued by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).
Councillor Delancy said emergency kits were distributed to shelters in flood prone areas across the parish.
He also assured that the Westmoreland Disaster Preparedness Committee is on alert to respond to any needs.
