Head of the Westmoreland Police Division, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Othneil Dobson is reporting that the parish recorded its lowest number of murders in nearly 18 years in 2025, reflecting significant progress in crime reduction efforts.

SSP Dobson, who was addressing the monthly meeting of the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation in Savanna-la-Mar on Thursday (February 12), informed that the parish ended last year with 39 murders, representing 61 fewer murders than in the previous year.

He also indicated that shootings declined during the period, with 43 fewer incidents recorded.

SSP Dobson noted that maintaining the downward trend in murders, will require sustained effort.

“So far this year, we’re still seeing a 33 percent reduction,” he said, adding that four murders have been recorded so far this year compared with six during the corresponding period last year.

The division is also seeing an overall reduction in major crimes of approximately 17 percent, for the year to date.

SSP Dobson emphasised that the police are determined to ensure that last year’s gains are not temporary, noting that members of the division remain committed to reducing crime even further in 2026.

The divisional head commended the men and women under his command for their continued dedication, pointing out that consistent teamwork and community support, remain critical to sustaining progress.

He also expressed appreciation to councillors and residents for their ongoing cooperation, which he described as an important factor in the division’s ability to carry out its crime-fighting strategies effectively.

SSP Dobson further stressed that the division would continue to intensify operations and community engagement initiatives, as it works toward achieving even better results in the months ahead.
