The Full Story

Volunteers from various organisations across Portland came together to beautify the coastal community of Bryan’s Bay for Labour Day on Friday (May 23).

The project was organised by the Portland Municipal Corporation and embodied the environmental theme for Labour Day 2025 – ‘Protect the Environment: Our Land, Our Duty, Our Future’.

The volunteers, including Miss Portland Festival Queen 2025 contestants, undertook de-bushing and cleaning, alongside constructing a new walkway to enhance the area.

Councillor for the Port Antonio Division, Dexter Rowland, told JIS News that Friday “[was] a wonderful day”.

“I am grateful that we [had] so many people and organisations involved. That is the way to develop a parish and country – everybody [getting] involved and [contributing] in whatever way they can,” he said.

Councillor Rowland indicated that a plan to beautify the entrance to the town of Port Antionio from the east and west ends was conceived “many years ago” and is part of general efforts to beautify the eastern parish.

He described the beautification of Bryan’s Bay as “the start of something wonderful”, noting that it will serve to improve Portland’s appeal.

“You can just imagine how beautiful Port Antonio will be and how many visitors will feel more welcome and want to come back to Port Antonio again and again,” Councillor Rowland said.
