Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Hon. Daryl Vaz, says major services have been provided in the city of Montego Bay over time, so residents no longer have to make mandatory trips to Kingston.
Speaking at the opening of Magna Motors’ modern showroom and service centre in Montego Bay, St. James, on February 13, Mr. Vaz said that the centre will not only alleviate the need for residents to travel to Kingston for the company’s automotive services but should be viewed also as the company expanding its footprint across the island.
Magna Motors is the dealership for Hyundai Jamaica.
The Minister emphasised that the new facility represents not only a convenience for consumers, but also a pivotal moment in the enhancement of Jamaica’s automotive landscape.
“The expansion strengthens Jamaica’s automotive landscape, offering consumers more choices, better service, and increased economic opportunities,” he said.
Mr. Vaz further underscored that the expansion aligns with the Government’s broader strategy to modernise and enhance the nation’s transportation infrastructure, noting that Hyundai Jamaica has been a valued partner in the Government’s initiatives aimed at keeping pace with technological advancements in mobility and energy efficiency.
“As we work towards improving our roadways, traffic management systems, and sustainable transportation options, we remain committed to promoting best practices that benefit Jamaica and its citizens,” Mr. Vaz said.
“What we are seeing here from Magna Motors reflects the Government’s ongoing efforts to integrate modern technologies into everyday life, particularly in the transportation sector,” he added.
The Minister said that the establishment of the Hyundai showroom and service centre is expected to create new jobs and stimulate economic growth within the community.
Highlighting global trends, Mr. Vaz also pointed out that there is a significant shift towards more fuel-efficient, hybrid, and electric vehicles worldwide, noting that the Government, in response, is proactively establishing an electric vehicle policy framework, which will facilitate the integration of electric vehicles and the expansion of charging infrastructure throughout the island.
The Minister, in the meantime, praised Montego Bay’s rapid growth as a city and its emergence as a major business hub, adding that the city is attracting significant franchises, including Magna Motors and its flagship Hyundai vehicles, showcasing its potential beyond just being a tourist destination.
Mr. Vaz also commended the Montego Bay Sangster International Airport, noting its modern infrastructure and world-class standards. He described it as a national asset that plays a crucial role in facilitating both tourism and commerce in the region.
