The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, is being lauded for its invaluable contribution in generating research and analysis that inform and shape policy.

“From advancement in healthcare, pioneering work in the social sciences, education, agriculture and technology, UWI represents a repository of expertise with the potential to transform lives,” said Senior Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Dr. Timar Stephenson.

He delivered remarks on behalf of Portfolio Minister, Senator Dr. the Hon. Dana Morris Dixon, during UWI’s Research Day on Thursday (March 13), held under the theme ‘The UWI Mona: Driving Jamaican, Caribbean and Global Development’.

Dr. Stephenson underscored that the theme reaffirms UWI’s steadfast dedication to producing research that is not merely academic in nature but demonstrably impactful in addressing pressing societal concerns and fostering development.

Meanwhile, he shared that education and innovation play a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of Jamaica, the region and global community.

“The role of academics in equipping students to navigate increasingly dynamic and an uncertain global landscape cannot be overstated. It’s imperative to prepare students to address complex real-world problems, adapt to rapidly evolving environment, capitalising on emerging opportunities and cultivate the capacity to acquire, learn, unlearn and relearn skills through their professional life,” he explained.

Dr. Stephenson pointed out that the research day offers a strategic platform for researchers to present their transformative projects to prospective investors and partners.

“On behalf of the Ministry, I extend my highest commendation to the esteemed faculty, researchers and students of the UWI, Mona, for their unwavering commitment to excellence. It is your passion for discovery, resolve in addressing real-world challenges, and belief in the transformative power of education and research that will continue to propel Jamaica, the Caribbean and the global community towards greater heights,” he said.
