The Full Story

Acting President of the University of Technology (UTech), Ambassador Burchell Whiteman, says the University’s Engineering Department can assist in the development of Jamaica.

He argued that the students of the Engineering Department, who worked on the University’s recently commissioned Solar Energy Project, have benefitted tremendously from the learning exercise, and are willing to partake in other such undertakings.

“UTech is the place where you can find students who are eager, and I might also say hungry, to be a part of the development of Jamaica,” he told JIS News, adding that the students are eager to work on projects relating to energy, technology, and some aspects of science and pharmacology.

The Acting President noted that while the University is aimed at producing world-class workers and academics, the primary focus of the institution is the development of Jamaica, which he said “can then be extended outwards, because we are living in an interconnected world.”

“Jamaica has to become the first port of call for many of the issues relating to our development in the fields of engineering, technology and energy,” the Ambassador told JIS News.

He said the university hopes that its 100 KW Solar Project, a product of a partnership with the Jamaica Public Service (JPS), will encourage Jamaicans to adopt such an initiative.

Pointing out that the solar project will be a major boost to the attractiveness of the engineering department,  Ambassador Whiteman informed that the Department will be opening its doors to conduct more researches, as it continues to help in the country’s development.
