The Universal Service Fund (USF) is funding a project to provide Wide Area Network connectivity for 73 police stations and facilities across the island, at a cost of $7 million.

This islandwide broadband fibre-optic network, being put in by FLOW, will provide interconnectivity and Internet across the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) facilities. This will allow officers to share information and will facilitate internal communication across stations.

Director of Projects at the USF, Mr. Everold Simms, said the JCF is working with the service provider to put in place the necessary infrastructure to accommodate the connections.

Five of the 73 facilities have already been connected, and the rest is to be completed within this financial year.

“It’s really a managed service, so it’s not just the ordinary Internet. It’s monitored by FLOW 24-hours per day, with a requirement that it should not be down for any long period of time,” he said, in an interview with JIS News.

Mr. Simms said the Agency has also just completed Phase 1 of a project to provide interconnectivity across 60 Ministry of Health facilities. He said this type of connectivity allows medical personnel to access medical information on patients from any of the facility locations. This was funded at a cost of approximately $20 million.

Forty-one branch libraries of the Jamaica Library Service and 68 post offices were also connected using similar technology. High Schools with e-Learning computer labs and schools on the Tablet-in-Schools programme have also been connected on Wide Area Networks.

The USF (formerly the Universal Access Fund Company Ltd) is an agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, with a mission of deploying broadband services and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in institutions across the island.
