The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management wishes to advise that as at 10.00am today the following schools were closed due to the continued smoke nuisance resulting from the fire at the Riverton City Dump.

The Facts

  • As steady progress with cooling down and extinguishing operations continues, the ODPEM reminds persons that there could be periodic increases in smoke levels across sections of the Corporate Area and St. Catherine.
  • All health centres in Kingston and St. Andrew as well as St. Catherine continue to provide extended services to residents in and around the affected communities.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management wishes to advise that as at 10.00am today the following schools were closed due to the continued smoke nuisance resulting from the fire at the Riverton City Dump.

The schools are:

 

Region One (Corporate Area)

–       Dupont Primary

–       Duhaney Park Primary

–       Pembroke Hall High

–       Coburn Gardens Primary & Junior High

–       George Headley Primary

 

Region Six (St Catherine & Clarendon)

 

–       Hydel Group

–       Most Portmore schools

 

As steady progress with cooling down and extinguishing operations continues, the ODPEM reminds persons that there could be periodic increases in smoke levels across sections of the Corporate Area and St. Catherine.

We also advise that persons experiencing health difficulties should seek medical attention. All health centres in Kingston and St. Andrew as well as St. Catherine continue to provide extended services to residents in and around the affected communities.

 

Tips for Protecting Yourself

  • Avoid undue exposure to the smoke by closing windows and doors.
  • Use a clean wet rag to cover your nose and mouth to minimize the effects of the smoke.
  • The elderly, children and those with respiratory issues should take particular precaution against smoke exposure.
