An update on the financial status of the state-run Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC), is expected soon.
Responding to questions raised at last week’s post-Cabinet media briefing at Jamaica House, Transport and Works Minister, Michael Henry, said the matter was discussed with newly appointed JUTC Chairman, Robin Levy, who is being given some time to “make his own impact (assessment)” on the situation, in order to adequately “analyse it.” The Minister added that he would be “following through” with Mr. Levy on the matter.
Meanwhile, Mr. Henry informed that in addition to Mr. Levy, new Depot Managers have been appointed “in some areas,” while a Managing Director is being sought for the state-run bus company.
Regarding a fare increase, the Transport Minister pointed out that, while this is “on the books,” he is trying to iron out certain attendant factors before making a decision, pointing out that, “it will be a matter that will be dealt with, hopefully within the next 30 to 60 days.”
On the matter of the acquisition of new buses, Mr. Henry said some 40 to 50 units, which are being sourced from Brazil, are expected in the island by year end, with “another 50 to follow.” Meanwhile, he informed that the proposed introduction of double-decker buses, is still being negotiated with a firm in London England.
On the proposed relocation of the JUTC’s administrative offices from Twickenham Park in St. Catherine to facilities at the former Lyndhurst Road depot in St. Andrew, Mr. Henry advised that this has been put on hold.He informed that the depot was closed by the late JUTC Chairman, Douglas Chambers.
“That relocation is still on the cards, but the present Chairman has asked that I put it on hold,” Mr. Henry said.
