The Full Story

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is urging persons in and around Riverton City to exercise the necessary precautions to safeguard health and safety as efforts continue to extinguish a blaze.

Earlier today, the Jamaica Fire Brigade deployed six fire engines in response to a fire at Westbrook Avenue in Riverton City. The fire emerged from a stack of tyres that was being stored in the said area.

While the location of the flames is within the Riverton City Community, it is not at the Riverton City Disposal Site and therefore not maintained by the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).

As efforts continue to extinguish the blaze, the ODPEM advises that surrounding communities may experience some smoke cover.

Tips for Protecting Yourself
ï‚· Avoid undue exposure to the smoke by closing windows and doors.
ï‚· Use a clean wet rag to cover your nose and mouth to minimize the effects of the smoke.
ï‚· The elderly, children and those with respiratory issues should pay particular attention not to exposing themselves to the smoke.
