The Full Story

Tourism Minister, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, says that 10 to 12 Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centres (GTRCMC) will be established around the world by the middle of the year.

He made the disclosure at a recent function at the GTRCMC located at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona.

The Minister informed that the expansion of the GTRCMC will move into high gear following the launch of Global Tourism Resilience Day on February 17 at World Expo Dubai 2020.

“So, we go to Amman to the Middle Eastern University to establish the centre there, which will be responsible for the Levant countries, primarily the Middle East and North Africa,” he noted.

Minister Bartlett informed that a partnership has been developed with the Global Knowledge Center in Amman, which has 100 other facilities across the world.

“This is a virtual arrangement that allows for the graduation of innovators and inventors,” he pointed out, noting that this is in line with building resilience in the business of innovation.

After Amman, GTRCMCs will be established in Barbados to serve the eastern Caribbean, Bulgaria, Namibia, Nigeria, Botswana, Canada at the George Brown College in Toronto, and Ghana.

“We have a programme for the Sevilla in Spain, and then we are looking at Australia and the Philippines,” Minister Bartlett added.

The GTRCMC is the world-leading research, advocacy, training and policy institution, which assists global tourism destinations with preparedness, management and recovery from disruptions and/or crises that impact tourism and threaten economies and livelihoods globally.
