The Full Story

The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) will, in fiscal year 2026/27, continue its plans to expand the Hellshire Sewage Treatment Plant, increasing its capacity by 109 per cent to support planned developments in Hellshire, St. Catherine.

The project is in the construction phase and is expected to be completed in June 2026.

This is outlined in the 2026/27 Public Bodies Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure, which was recently tabled in the House of Representatives by the Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Hon. Fayval Williams.

The document also highlights the Raintree Commercial Complex, which entails developing Block 1 of the Caymanas Estate Development Area into a commercial subdivision.

“The land has been subdivided into 78 lots, with 69 earmarked for commercial/light industrial businesses, whilst the remaining nine lots are zoned to provide infrastructure and amenities for the development. Essential infrastructure, such as roadways, sewage systems, water and power supplies, will be built out,” the report said.

The project is presently in the execution phase and is scheduled for completion by July 2026.

Meanwhile, the UDC plans to implement the Ocho Rios Milford Village/Centre.

“This is a new mixed-use development project which covers approximately 9.15 acres. The development will include residential, commercial, office [space] and multi-storey parking, as well as storm water management and recreational areas,” the document stated.

The project is currently in the planning and approval phase, with several studies required to support the development.

The UDC, established under the Urban Development Act of 1968, plays a critical role in advancing Jamaica’s sustainable and holistic urban development.

The Corporation’s primary mandate is to undertake urban and rural renewal, while safeguarding natural resources and promoting economic advancement in areas designated by the Government of Jamaica.
