Troy Primary School Being Renamed in Honour of Veronica Campbell Brown

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, says Cabinet has signed off on the renaming of the Troy Primary School in Trelawny in honour of Olympian, Veronica Campbell Brown.

The eight-time Olympic Medalist attended the institution before moving to Vere Technical High School in Clarendon where she completed her secondary education and rose national prominence while competing in the annual Boys and Girls Athletics Championships.

While indicating that the first quarter of 2019 is the projected timeline to complete the formalities for the renaming, Ms. Grange said this also depends on Mrs. Campbell Brown’s availability.

The Minster provided the update while speaking with journalists following the Jersey Mike’s Classic Welcome Celebration at the Hyatt Ziva Rose Hall Resort in St James on November 15.

Ms. Grange also advised that Cabinet signed off on plans to refurbish sections of the school, for which designs have been drafted.

The Minister indicated that the restoration work, which includes the old headmaster’s cottage that will be converted to a resource centre as well as the development of a playfield, has been sanctioned and is being supported by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT).

She said the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information and the Sports Development Foundation (SDF) are also supporting the engagements at the school, which is over 100 years old and has been declared a heritage site.

“We have funds now to start the work… but there are additional funds to be put in the budget for the next fiscal year. We are really excited about it [and] so, come next year, we will be moving speedily to get the facility ready,” Ms. Grange added.
