Tropical Storm Warning Could Soon Be Lifted As Elsa Moves Away

The Office of Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management (ODPEM) wishes to advise that a TROPICAL STORM WARNING remains in effect for Jamaica. Tropical Storm Elsa is moving away from Jamaica and
the country will experience periods of heavy showers lingering across the island this evening into tonight.

The ODPEM continues to monitor the condition across the island. All parish Emergency Operation Centres remains
activated. Thirteen Shelters are opened across the island mainly in Kingston & St. Andrew, St Catherine and Clarendon with approximately thirty (30) persons reported occupying them at this time.

The agency is further reminding persons that flash flooding are still possible in low-lying and flood prone areas and
there is also the possibility of landslides in high elevation/hilly areas.

There have been reports of communities impacted by flooding in the following areas:
 Kingston & St. Andrew
 St. Thomas
 Clarendon
 St Catherine

Small craft operators, including fishers from the cays and banks are still being reminded to remain in safe harbour
until all clear has been given and wind and sea conditions return to normal.

Continue to take the following safeguards during heavy rains:
 Be ready to evacuate and know your evacuation routes
 Avoid flooded waterways, i.e. Fordings, gullies, streams or rivers, either on foot or in vehicles.
 Ensure that all important documents are secured in plastic bags or waterproof containers.
 Turn off all electrical power, gas and water supplies in areas that are in immediate danger for flooding.

The ODPEM & the MET Service will continue to monitor the system and provide the public with further
information.
