The Full Story

The Meteorological Service has issued a Severe Weather Alert for all parishes valid for Sunday, September 16, 2018 through to Monday, September 17, 2018.

Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to produce an increase in rainfall across Jamaica this weekend. The forecast for the weekend is outbreaks of heavy showers and thunderstorms that are expected to continue over most of the island from Saturday through Monday. Flash flooding is possible over low-lying and flood-prone areas.

The ODPEM has alerted all related agencies and Parish Disaster Committees. Emergency Managers, Responders and Volunteers have also been placed on standby. All Parish Emergency Operation Centers have been activated.

The ODPEM has activated its National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) at Level 1 which means ODPEM staffed only. For further information you can contact the NEOC by calling 876-906 9674-5 or 876-754- 9077-8 or call your Parish Emergency Operations Centre.

The Public is asked to continue monitoring the media for further advisories and to avoid areas that are at risk from flooding and landslides. The Public should pay close attention to the advisories issued by the National Works Agency (NWA) and take the following precautions in the event of heavy rains:

  1. Be ready to evacuate if you live in low-lying or flood-prone areas.
  2. Decide on evacuation routes bearing in mind the road closures in the corporate area as indicated by the NWA
  3. Avoid flooded waterways, i.e. Fords, gullies, streams or rivers, either on foot or in vehicles.

The ODPEM will continue to monitor the situation.
