It was with deep regret that I learned of the death of one of our veteran politicians, Mr. Neville Lewis, former Government Minister and Member of Parliament for North West, St. Elizabeth.
Mr. Lewis, who rose to the position of Deputy Leader of his party, was a grassroots politician who was dedicated to the welfare of those he served. He was also a person known for his fairness and even-handedness. While he served his party well, he was not oblivious to a broader national commitment.
Neville Lewis was a patriot who was committed to his country and its welfare. For his unstinting service to his country, the Government will accord him an official funeral on Saturday, January 13, scheduled to take place at 11:00 a.m. at the Lacovia Anglican Church in St. Elizabeth.
As Minister with responsibility for Social Security, Mr. Lewis worked to ensure that the poor and vulnerable were protected. As Minister of Local Government he maintained a close relationship with councillors, whose respect he earned.
Neville Lewis was known for both his firm convictions and the courage with which he held those convictions. He was a person of integrity who did not seek expediency over what he deemed the right thing to do. From his life we can draw many important lessons.
I extend my condolences to his wife, Jasmine, and his family as well as to his many friends.
