The Trelawny Municipal Corporation has taken steps to ensure the safety and protection of the parish’s most vulnerable, as preparations move into high gear for the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
This was stated by Chairman of the Corporation and Mayor of Falmouth, Councillor Collen Gager, in an interview with JIS News.
He noted that in addition to the usual preparations, the Corporation is focusing on persons who are not able to take care of themselves, starting with inmates at the Trelawny Infirmary.
“We will be evacuating inmates who will be taken to the shelter at Hague Primary School,” the Mayor said.
He noted that a similar treatment is being given to clients at the Falmouth drop-off centre.
“I am also taking the opportunity to appeal to persons living in low lying areas in Falmouth and persons living in gullies and on hillsides to start making preparations to leave their homes and seek accommodation in the shelters nearest to them,” Mayor Gager urged.
He assured that all departments and agencies are on high alert at this time, chief among which are the fire department and WPM Waste Management Limited.
Drain cleaning operations and the clearing of some waterways, which began at the start of the 2024 Hurricane Season in June, have been ramped up, Mayor Gager said.
