TPDCo Tourism Quiz Final Set For June 24

The Full Story

Hosanna Preparatory School in St. James and Mount Airy Primary School in Westmoreland will contest the final of the fifth Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) Tourism Quiz, slated for Monday, June 24.

The match will be aired on Television Jamaica (TVJ), beginning 6:00 p.m.

Coordinator for Corporate Communications and Community Awareness at TPDCo, Marline Stephenson Dalley, told JIS News that persons are invited to tune in and witness the best young minds in tourism knowledge compete for top prizes.

“We would like everyone to be glued to their television sets, to catch all the excitement and the fun from the final match in our competition,” Mrs. Stephenson Dalley said.

She informed that there are multiple prizes for the winners, adding that the teams placing third and fourth will not leave empty handed.

“We have the championship trophy and individual trophies for the team members. We have a cash prize of $200,000 from TPDCo,” Mrs. Stephenson Dalley informed.

She added that team members and teachers from the winning team will also receive day passes from various resorts, complimentary tours from attractions, and gift baskets and certificates.

Mrs. Stephenson Dalley further indicated that the second-place team will also receive individual trophies and $150,000 from TPDCo, among other prizes. The awards ceremony will take place at the end of the match.

A total of 32 schools participated in this year’s competition, doubling the number of entrants in previous years.

Mrs. Stephenson Dalley told JIS News that the increased participation demonstrates the growing interest and enthusiasm for tourism education among primary and preparatory schools.

“This quiz is really designed to infuse some of our culture and the culture of tourism in our students. We take information from different sources, including the Adventures of Sprucey and Limey, a comic book produced by TPDCo. We also have Our Jamaica, a publication done by the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association,” she further indicated.

Mrs. Stephenson Dalley also informed that the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) syllabus for social studies, mathematics and general knowledge, news and current affairs, and a basic Spanish manual relating to tourism, are among the resource materials used for the quiz.

She thanked the sponsors and all other stakeholders and interests who contributed to the success of this year’s competition.
