The Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) will be partnering with the Portland Parish Development Committee to refurbish attractions in the parish for the upcoming winter tourist season, which begins in December.
In an interview with JIS News, Syble Rendle, Chairperson of the Portland Parish Development Committee said a planning committee has been established to work out the details of the initiative, adding that the aim was to ensure that at least 10 per cent of the attractions are refurbished and fully operational by the start of the season.Portland has a number of tourist attractions, with rafting on the Rio Grande, Nonsuch Caves and Blue Lagoon being some of the more famous ones.
Their individual and combined appeal have enhanced the beauty of the parish, and for many years had made it one of the most sought after destinations for tourists and other visitors. In recent years, however, a number of them have become non-functional, having lapsed into a state of disrepair.
Mrs. Rendle expressed confidence that refurbishing of the attractions and putting them back into operation would play a major role in reviving the tourist industry in the parish, while greatly enhancing current efforts to reposition Port Antonio as a major resort.
She said the planning committee was working assiduously to ensure the success of the venture, in order to assist Portland’s tourist industry to realise its full potential and optimise its contribution to the economy of the parish.
