Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Derrick Kellier, says he is to take steps to delay full enactment of the Flexi Work legislation, in order to consider new concerns raised by the public.

Mr. Kellier, who made the comment at a public consultation on the legislation in Montego Bay, on September 4, said concerns raised by the Jamaica Umbrella Group of Churches and other interest groups, indicate that more time is needed to facilitate a better understanding, and to allay apprehension surrounding the passage of the Flexi Work legislation that is expected to be debated in Parliament on September 09.

“It is clear from this discussion this evening that the country could do with more time and more levels of discussion,” the Minister argued.

Continuing, Mr. Kellier said the Government would be giving the process extended time when further public sensitisation will be done.  “Maybe, we will give ourselves a three-month period, so that we complete this activity before the end of the year,” Mr. Kellier added.

The Minister pointed out that Flexi Work arrangements are already in operation in Jamaica, in bars, hotels and supermarkets as well as in some Government Ministries and agencies.

Presentations were also made by representatives from the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU), and the Jamaica Umbrella Group of Churches.

The consultation focussed on the benefits and challenges of flexible work arrangements and how this will impact work ethic, productivity, industrial relations and labour market reform,  important elements in nation-building and economic development.

This was the second of three public consultations, which are part of  the Ministry of Labour and  Social Security’s ongoing drive to promote public awareness and education on the Employment (Flexi Work Arrangements) Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2014.

Another consultation is planned for Eastern Jamaica (Portland), to enable residents and employers to be informed and to air their views.

The Employment (Flexible Work Arrangements) (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, was tabled in Parliament on March 25, 2014.
