Four educators who have given long and distinguished service to education were honoured at a luncheon, on May 4, hosted by Kingston Bookshop Limited, as part of its annual celebration of teachers during Education Week.
Accumulatively, the four teachers have given 100 years of service in the classroom. They are: Acting Vice-Principal of Christiana Leased Primary School, Vinnette Graham-Bowen; Senior Teacher and Head of the History and Social Studies Department at Hampton High School, Ramdeen Singh; Principal of Kemps Hill High School, Lebert Wright; and Vice-Principal of Munro College, Sonia Neil.
The awardees were presented with citations and plaques, at the function, which was held at the Golf View Hotel, in Mandeville, Manchester.
Responding on behalf of the awardees, Mr. Wright said they were thankful for the recognition, and they “embrace it because the cause is just.”
“Profound commendation is in order for a great initiative, which is administered annually during Education Week to recognise some of the nation’s teachers for their achievement in education,” he said.
Mr. Wright argued that as a nation and as citizens in a global community, “we cannot progress if our population is not educated,” and charged teachers that, “it is with this level of consciousness that we will implore you, our colleagues, to continue to give of your best in educating and training our nation’s children, irrespective of the daily challenges we might face.”
“As committed and devoted individuals with a passion for teaching and by extension, nation building, we unreservedly accept the awards with pride,” the educator said.
Kingston Bookshop Limited, since 1988, has been hosting award luncheons annually during Education Week to honour teachers who have given long and dedicated service to their profession. Functions are held in three locations – Kingston, Montego Bay St. James and Mandeville.
