Acting Commissioner General of Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ), Ainsley Powell, says the agency is seeking to review its business hours, and the service it provides to clients at its tax offices.

These, Mr. Powell says, include restructuring early morning weekday services, and extending these on weekends.

He made this disclosure while addressing Tuesday’s (March 25) Private Sector Organization of Jamaica (PSOJ) President’s Breakfast Forum, held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston.

Mr. Powell noted several clients’ concerns that, currently, early morning weekday services, which some tax offices provide, beginning at 8:00am, are limited.

He pointed out that this is due partly to the significant number of persons taking advantage of the early opening hours to conduct various transactions. He added, however, that “we get a lot of complaints that, at eight o’ clock, the service is not there (to attend these transactions).”

“If that is the case, and it’s what the customers want, then, maybe, we need to adjust ourselves around that. We figure that we need…to manage our lines…our queuing system,” the Acting Commissioner General said.

Mr. Powell pointed out that, currently, the TAJ, through information provided by its offices, is able to determine the duration of clients’ transactions.

“The question is, (however)…how long does it take you to get to the cashier (and what the nature of your business is). So we are looking at getting a queuing system to help us with that management aspect of things,” he added.

Mr. Powell said TAJ is also exploring the possibility of extending the weekend client services, which are now offered at its offices.

He pointed out that these services are available at the Portmore tax office in St. Catherine where it “has taken off”.

“So we are trying to determine whether we could do something similar thing at (for example) Constant Spring on Saturday, and to have staff there to provide that kind of service. We are looking at that with the Ministry (of Finance and Planning) to see how we can (best pursue it),” Mr. Powell added.
