The Full Story

Minister of Energy and Mining, James Robertson has proposed to Cabinet that the Jamaica National Energy Policy 2009-2030 be tabled in Parliament as a White Paper to facilitate its timely implementation.

Minister of Information, Daryl Vaz told this week’s Post Cabinet Press briefing at Jamaica House in Kingston that the Energy Minister had presented Cabinet with a Submission in connection with the policy and advised of the progress made to date.

“Jamaica’s National Energy Policy 2009-2020 represents the revision of the Energy Policy Green Paper 2006-2020 based on national consultations and comments received from a wide cross-section of society, as well as informed by the current realities facing Jamaica. The Policy is also in keeping with the country’s long-term plan to achieve developed country status by 2030” Mr. Vaz explained.

The policy proposes priority attention to seven key areas: energy conservation and efficiency; modernising the country’s energy infrastructure; developing renewable energy sources; securing energy supply through diversification of fuels; developing a comprehensive governance/regulatory framework; and enabling Government Ministries, departments and agencies to be leaders of energy management and eco-efficiency in industries.
