The Full Story

This summer, students will have the exciting opportunity to develop or hone their talent in music at the Jamaica Music in Schools’ Summer Music Camp.

The one-week camp, from July 16 to 22, will take place at the Church Teachers’ College in Mandeville.

It is being staged by the Organisation for Strategic Development in Jamaica (OSDJ) in association with the Ministry of Education and Youth (MOEY), Church Teachers’ College, Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts (EMCVPA), Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College, The Mico University College, and the University of Minnesota and Winona State University in the United States.

The Ministry, in a bulletin, said the Summer Music Camp emerged from the Jamaica Music in Schools project that was launched in 2015 through parentship with OSDJ.

The camp provides “a once in a lifetime opportunity” for students interested in music, particularly those in bands, to get first-hand interaction with qualified instructors from high-profile partnering institutions, the Ministry said.

The Summer Music Camp targets students of all levels of experience – beginners, intermediate and advanced, from grades six to 12. Students will be taught pedagogical and practical methods on guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums and percussions, flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, steel pan, and voice, among other areas.

The one-week summer camp will culminate with a concert showcasing what the campers learn over the period.

The main object of the camp is to stir the interest of band music in Jamaica, honing the talents of budding musicians, while creating opportunities and holistic development for students as they embark on their journey to success.
