MANDEVILLE — Students of Cross Keys High School, in Manchester, were introduced to the offerings of institutions of higher learning in the parish, at a Career Day, held at the school on May 26.

Principal of the institution, Ralph Nelson, told the students that while the school teaches the academic subjects, the institution must provide them with practical hands-on experience to interact with tertiary and vocational institutions.

“We want to produce students who will be productive adults, and contribute to the development of Jamaica,” Mr. Nelson said.

Meanwhile, Guidance Counsellor at the school, Beverley Kean-Jones, told JIS News that the day was geared at helping the students, “to choose the most appropriate career field, based on their interest and capabilities."

“With the information garnered, the students, especially the fifth formers, would be able to know the qualifications they need, and what is expected of them when they go out into the world of work. So, this Career Day is to help prepare the students to move on into the world of work,” she said.

For his part, Head Boy at the school, Romario Latchman, said that all students must realise the purpose of being at school, and settle down and do their best. “We are all given choices and it is best for us to choose the right one. Career day provides crucial information, and the students are excited about choosing a career,” he added.

In her address to the students,  Acting Head of Section at the Newport Vocational Training Centre,  Shirley Bartley emphasised that students must engage in career planning.

“Having a career path is like having an insurance policy. You are less likely to be underpaid, since your research will tell you what you will likely be earning. And, you will not just settle for a job; instead you will do something that gives you satisfaction. Your career path should reflect your goals and needs,” she said.
