Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, has challenged students and educators to hold fast to Jamaica’s cultural and moralistic principles.
The Governor-General was speaking at the Bethlehem Moravian College on Thursday, September 26, during an educational tour of St. Elizabeth, accompanied by Lady Allen. They also visited Munro College and Lovers’ Leap.
“Students and future teachers, I want to challenge you, that you are the cradlers of our civilisation and the protectors of our culture and our morals,” he said.
“This is what our teachers and our graduates of tertiary institutions are charged with – that responsibility to protect the nation from moral and cultural decay, while educating our youth to be thinkers and not just reflectors of other people’s thoughts,” he added.
The Governor-General also called on the college’s teaching staff to be critical thinkers and be on the cutting-edge of educational trends and research.
“You have to be masters of the language. You have to know how to ask and answer questions and engage your students in such a way that they can see clearly where you are going, and you have to be on the cutting edge, because those students, while you are talking, can tell you that what you are saying is not right,” he said.
At the all-boy Munro College, the Governor-General charged the young men to stay true to their “traditions, achievements and reputations”.
“Young men, you are at a critical stage of your preparation for life as a citizen of your country and the world. I, therefore, urge you to take stock of your abilities, plan realistically for your future and remain open to disappointments and new opportunities that may unexpectedly arise,” he said.
Welcoming Their Excellencies were Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Floyd Green; Mayor of Black River, Councillor Derrick Sangster; Custos of St. Elizabeth, Hon. Beryl Rochester; and Justices of the Peace (JPs).
