The Full Story

Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, says the Government has developed a strategic framework to guide the introduction of electric vehicles (EV) in Jamaica.

Delivering the Throne Speech to mark the ceremonial opening of Parliament in Gordon House on February 10, the Governor-General noted that an Electric Vehicle Council has been established, which will oversee the implementation of the framework.

The Council will give oversight and review any policies, legislation and regulations related to the deployment of EVs in Jamaica, and comment and provide feedback on matters relating to safety and suitability of EV technologies contemplated for the country.

It will also respond to queries or concerns from stakeholders within a reasonable time period, and advise the Minister with responsibility for Energy, on the extent to which the strategic framework is being implemented.

The Council held its first meeting on May 14, 2021 and approved the e-mobility strategic framework.

Meanwhile, the Governor-General said that decarbonisation of the energy sector, through the introduction of renewable energy, combined with the electrification of the transportation sector, represents critical drivers in reducing Jamaica’s carbon footprint.
