Story Highlights

  • In October 2014, the number of persons in the Labour Force was 1,310,700, an increase of 6,200 (0.5%).
  • The Employed Labour Force for October 2014 was 1,124,500 persons, which were 14,000 (1.3%) more than the 1,110,500 recorded in October 2013.
  • The Employment Rate for October 2014 was 85.8 per cent, which was a 0.7 percentage point increase compared with 85.1% in October 2013.

The main findings of the October 2014 Labour Force Survey, conducted by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) are presented below. The reference week for this survey was September 21-27, 2014.

 

  • In October 2014, the number of persons in the Labour Force was 1,310,700, an increase of 6,200 (0.5%) above the 1,304,500 recorded in October 2013. The male labour force increased by 3,500 (0.5%) from 713,500 in October 2013 to 717,000 persons in October 2014 and the female labour force increased by 2,700(0.5%) moving from 591,000 in October 2013 to 593,700 persons in October 2014.
  • The Employed Labour Force for October 2014 was 1,124,500 persons, which were 14,000 (1.3%) more than the 1,110,500 recorded in October 2013.  For males,  it increased by 8,200 (1.3%) to 645,900 and for females it increased by 5,800 (1.2%) to 478,600.
  • The Employment Rate for October 2014 was 85.8 per cent, which was a 0.7 percentage point increase compared with 85.1% in October 2013. The Employment Rate increased for both males and females over the period. For males, it increased by 0.7 percentage point, moving from 89.4% to 90.1%, and for females it increased by 0.6 percentage point, moving from 80% to 80.6%.
  • The number of persons who were classified as Outside the Labour Force in October 2014 was 772, 900. This represents a slight decrease of 1,200 (0.2%) when compared to 774,100 in October 2013. In the same period, the number of males Outside the Labour Force decreased marginally by 1,000 (0.3%) moving from 306,400 to 305,400. The number of females was relatively unchanged moving from 467,700 in October 2013 to 467,500 in October 2014.
  • In the Employed Labour Force the Occupation group ‘Skilled Agricultural and Fishery Workers’ increased by 6,800 persons (3.4%), moving from 198,200 in October 2013 to 205,000 in October 2014. The group ‘Plant and Machine Operators and Assemblers’ had the largest decline of 2800 (4.3%) persons for the period, moving from 64,700 in October 2013 to 61,900 in October 2014.

 

  • The largest increases in the number of employed persons by Industry occurred in the groups ‘Wholesale & Retail, Repair of Motor Vehicle & Equipment’ and ‘Agriculture, Hunting, Forestry & Fishing’. The number of persons employed in the group ‘Wholesale & Retail, Repair of Motor Vehicle & Equipment’ increased by 11,700 (5.5%) while the group ‘Agriculture, Hunting, Forestry & Fishing’ increased by 7,800 (3.9%).
  • The number of Unemployed persons decreased by 7,800 (4.0%) moving from 194,000 in October 2013 to 186,200 in October 2014. The number of unemployed males and females decreased by 4,700 (6.2%) and 3,100 (2.6%) respectively over the same period.
  • The Unemployment Rate for October 2014 was 14.2 per cent, which was a 0.7 percentage point decrease compared to 14.9% in October 2013. In the same period the unemployment rate for males and females declined moving from 10.6% to 9.9% and 20.0% to 19.4% respectively.
  • The Unemployment rates among youths aged 14-24 years was 36.0% for October 2014. This was a decrease of 1.7 percentage points when compared with the October 2013 estimate of 37.7%. Over the period, the unemployment rates among youths decreased for males and increased for females. For males, it decreased by 4.1 percentage points, moving from 31.4% to 27.3% while for females it increased by 1.6 percentage points, moving from 46.2% to 47.8%.
