State Visit Ends With Official Farewell

Before leaving the island on Friday (April 15), President of the Republic of Rwanda His Excellency Paul Kagame, was treated to an official farewell, accentuated by the strains of Jamaica’s national anthem and the customary Royal Salute.
The President departed the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston at 3:22 pm, marking the end of a three-day State Visit to Jamaica.
Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, and Prime Minister the Most Hon. Andrew Holness headed the group of dignitaries that were at the airport to officially bid the President farewell.
Also present for the ceremonial departure were Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith; Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Leslie Campbell; and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Ambassador Sheila Monteith.
Opposition Spokesperson on Industry, Investment and Global Logistics, Anthony Hylton, who represented Leader of the Opposition Mark Golding, was also among the group seeing the President off.
During his visit, President Kagame addressed a joint sitting of the Houses of Parliament at Gordon House; called on the Governor-General at King’s House; and met with the Opposition Leader. He was also treated to a State Dinner at King’s House.
President Kagame had also met with Prime Minister Holness for bilateral talks at Jamaica House. Following the talks, they signed two bilateral Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) on political consultations and tourism development and promotion.
Prior to his departure, President Kagame attended ‘Think Jamaica 2022’, a Government to Government and Civil Society Dialogue, held at Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.
President Kagame’s visit sought to deepen bilateral relations between Jamaica and Rwanda. He has the distinction of being the first Rwandan head of State to visit Jamaica.
Jamaica and Rwanda established diplomatic relations in November 1998.
