The St. Mary Health Department has implemented a number of measures to prevent the malaria infection, which is affecting a number of communities in Kingston and St. Catherine, from spreading to the parish.
Albert Brown, Deputy Chief Public Health Inspector for St. Mary, said the measures include the close monitoring of persons affected by fever, fogging of ponds, rivers, gullies and swamps in Port Maria, Highgate, Tower Isle, and Gayle and conducting a public education campaign.
The education campaign, he said, would serve to sensitize residents on how they could protect themselves against the disease, including keeping their surroundings clean, closing doors and windows, using mosquito repellents and wearing protective clothing.
No case of malaria has been diagnosed in St. Mary.
