St. Mary Agricultural Expo Set for March 23 & 24

Plans for the staging of the 22nd annual St. Mary Agricultural Expo are progressing smoothly.The show, which will be held on March 23 and 24, at the Gray’s Inn Estate in Annotto Bay, will be hosted by the St. Mary Association of Branch Societies of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), in association with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA).
The theme for this year’s show is ‘Agriculture and Tourism – continuing the partnership’, and among the special features will be the St. Mary Farm Queen Competition, the St. Mary Champion Farmer competition, Youth in Agriculture competition and the JAS branches competition.
Other activities include a pan chicken competition, a coconut husking competition, budding and grafting demonstrations, a cattle display and a floral arrangement demonstration.
The show will also feature an entertainment package on Easter Monday, with performances by a number of artistes and cultural groups.
Parish Manager of the JAS for St. Mary, Cavon Murdoch, told JIS News that the show is being organized by the St. Mary Agri Expo Show Committee, which is chaired by hotelier, Jeff McKitty and includes a number of prominent persons in the parish.
The Manager said the organizing committee was currently in the process of seeking sponsors for the event, adding that the two-day spectacle would place major emphasis on the use of greenhouse technology, and irrigation powered by solar energy as farming methods to be used in the drive to diversify and improve agricultural production in the country.
