The Full Story

The courage and service demonstrated by residents of St. James during Hurricane Melissa will take centre stage at the St. James National Heroes Day Civic and Awards Ceremony on Monday, October 19, with 10 individuals set to receive the Municipal Medal of Honour for acts of bravery during the disaster.

Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, told JIS News that the decision to reshape this year’s ceremony was influenced by the impact of the hurricane and the courage and service displayed by residents.

“In the spirit of Heritage Week [and Heroes Day], and just days before the anniversary of Hurricane Melissa, we will pay tribute to our National Heroes while recognising the extraordinary citizens of St. James,” he said.

Councillor Vernon said the initiative forms part of a broader effort to recognise individuals whose actions embodied the spirit of service during one of the most challenging periods in the parish’s history.

Municipal volunteers who supported the Emergency Operations Centre, along with civil servants who went above and beyond their regular duties during the emergency response and early recovery phases, will also be recognised.

They will receive the Mayor’s Special Award and the newly introduced Mayor’s Excellence Award for Public Service.

“This adjustment is unique to 2026 and is designed to reflect both the heritage of our parish and the living heroism of our people. It is a symbolic ceremony that reminds us that heroism is alive in the actions of ordinary citizens who, in extraordinary times, become heroes,” Councillor Vernon informed.

The traditional Sam Sharpe Awards will continue, ensuring that the ceremony maintains its focus on individuals who exemplify service, sacrifice, and community spirit.

The Corporation opened the nomination process to the public for the Municipal Medal of Honour, Sam Sharpe Awards, and Mayor’s Excellence Award categories.

Councillor Vernon noted that while the Corporation already maintains a database of volunteers, members of the public had an opportunity to nominate individuals they believe are deserving of recognition.
