More than $17 million in scholarships, grants, book vouchers, and other educational support were provided for students in the St. James Southern constituency this year, says Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. Homer Davis.
The MP, who is also Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister (West) was making his contribution to the 2024/25 Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives, recently.
He noted that 119 students were awarded for their outstanding performance in the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) assessment, during St. James Southern’s annual high achievers awards ceremony.
He said that all recipients received certificates of excellence in addition to book vouchers valued at $15,000 each and $10,000 in cash.
Additionally, the top boy and girl were each given laptops as they prepare for the rigours of high school.
“I take this opportunity to highlight top boy Jahvin Campbell of St. Mary’s Preparatory, who amassed 382.7 points and passed for Manchester High School, and Maldon Primary’s Ikeya Bennett with her stunning 383.4 points. She is now attending the Montego Bay High School for Girls,” Mr. Davis said.
The MP informed that in August, more than 1,000 students from the primary and secondary levels received book vouchers valued at over $7 million.
Another 600-plus children benefited from an additional allocation of $2.5 million to provide back-to-school supplies, and 58 students received tuition assistance totalling $3 million.
The MP expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information for the ongoing support of educational initiatives to benefit students.
